Against the current

Many poems and writings of Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975) lament the disappearance of a rural world with its regional peculiarities, a world Pasolini experienced in Friuli and from which he was forced to flee at the age of 27.

Werner Berg also had to acknowledge the disappearance of an traditional rural world over the course of his 50 years of artistic work, after choosing at the age of 27 to live and paint within an archaic farming community in the Slovenian-influenced area of Lower Carinthia.

His works are juxtaposed with film images by Pier Paolo Pasolini, revealing analogies in pictorial composition and structure between these two artists, who never knew each other in their lifetimes. Text panels featuring quotes and poems by Pier Paolo Pasolini, alongside texts by Werner Berg, reaffirm their rejection of materialism and uncritical belief in progress. Both can be seen as prophets of changes that today threaten the world.

More than 40 etchings by Alfred Hrdlicka (1928–2009) impressively and often disturbingly explore Pasolini’s homosexuality, his fate marked by decades of hostility, and the deep shock of his brutal murder.
