Women on the path

“It was in the context of this very simple theme that the special nature of this region first really struck me,” recounted Werner Berg.

One of the main themes in Berg’s later work – the human form walking through the landscape – appears here for the first time in an oil painting. Werner Berg would vary and develop this theme in numerous paintings throughout his life. The establishment of such thematic complexes never indicated standstill or mere repetition. On the contrary, Berg deserves credit for his devotion to specific artistic objectives and for his in-depth exploration of them in an era when styles and modes of expression were changing with increasing rapidity. The transformation of a small world into a metaphor for our existence through its depiction would become Werner Berg’s life’s work.
