Young Family
In this painting, Werner Berg depicted himself together with his wife, his oldest daughter Ursula and his newly born daughter Klara in the parlor of his farmhouse.
Berg had met his wife Amalie Kuster, also known as “Mauki”, at the beginning of his university years in Vienna. Together they both successfully completed their political science degrees. Declining all the many professional opportunities that offered themselves after her graduation, she supported her partner’s wish to become a painter. From the beginning, she also shared the life of a simple farmer with him and was always a calm and forceful presence in the background. Her death in 1970 plunged the artist into deep loneliness, and in 1972 he dedicated the newly opened Werner Berg Galerie in Bleiburg in her memory.
