Cripples II

A weak and disabled person living on the edge of society attracts Werner Berg's attention. From his very beginning, his interest and artistic bias was directed at the excluded ones, beggars, the sick, poor and hated Gypsies and right at the persecution and hatred of Carinthian Slovenians, who as a minority often suffered from exposure. Werner Berg's pictures never make accusations, they are without any tendency, they simply state:  this alltogether presents the world.

And nevertheless, the bysiders standing at the edge could be used as a metaphor for the artist position on the edge of society. This is what Michael Guttenbrunner wrote to Werner Berg: “As lonely, exposed and special as your social existence, as your life on Earth is also your artistic existence, your residence in the intellectual world.
