After the Game of Curling

Curlers on the ice represent a special thematic area. I don’t really know much about curling, and maybe it’s best that way, since this leads me to take in its images all the more strongly. When the players are walking around on the ice, often excited, often standing there like statues, it is like a ballet to me – like an appearance of the human in nature that does not exist anywhere else,” explained Werner Berg.

Curling was a favorite pastime on the frozen little lakes of Lower Carinthia. The lanes, freed of snow and frost, were smooth as glass. The players and onlookers in their warm jackets and colorful sweaters cavorted on the ice, offering the artist sitting to the side with his sketchbook a wealth of visual imagery.
